We all know about Christmas and Hanukkah, but a lot of people do not realize that there are tons of holidays being celebrated over the winter months. Here are some amazing holidays that you should definitely be aware of:
1. Saint Nicholas Day: This Holiday is celebrated throughout Europe on December 6th. The night before children put their shoes outside and then Saint Nicholas comes to their house and leaves presents by their shoes.
2. Kwanzaa: This Holiday is celebrated the day after Christmas until New Year’s Day. It celebrates African heritage and culture. Kwanzaa ends with a big feast and was created in the 60’s so people would not get carried away with the commercialization of the holidays.
3. Las Posadas: This Holiday is celebrated in Latin American households from December 16th to Christmas Eve. During this time Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem is celebrated. To be more specific, people celebrating the Holiday will join a procession with their community, singing Christmas Carols while carrying images that represent Joseph and Mary. The procession goes to a different person’s house every night and then asks for shelter. After the homeowner agrees to let them in the procession enters the house where they have a casual party.
