Recently the DD Ombuds had the opportunity to attend a class led by Shirley Paceley and Linda Sandman about trauma informed advocacy. What is “trauma informed advocacy”? Well, many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities will experience some form of trauma in their lives. This could be abuse, neglect, or exploitation, and it can come in many different forms. Therefore, it is very important to know how best to support someone who has experienced trauma, especially if they choose you to disclose their experience. If you would like the DD Ombuds to speak to a group about ways to prevent abuse and neglect and how people with developmental disabilities can get support, give us a call at 833-727-8900, or email us at [email protected].
