The Office of Developmental Disabilities Ombuds spent March 27, 2018 at the Tools 4 Success Conference at Tacoma Community College. DD Ombuds staff educated and informed students, teachers and parents about rights in the workplace, self-advocacy, services the DD Ombuds provide and resources about people’s rights and who to contact if you feel your rights are being denied.
The DD Ombuds presented three workshops about the rights of people with disabilities while working titled “Self-Advocacy at Work” The workshop discussed the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it protects people from disability discrimination. We had conversations about jobs people had and how they have disclosed or talked about their disability with people at work or where they volunteered. We also chatted about reasonable accommodations and how they can help people at work.
DD Ombuds Self Advocacy Educator, Tim McCue, gave the keynote presentation and shared his story on becoming a self-advocate. Tim explained why it is important for him to work on issues that affect people with developmental disabilities. Tim answered questions about how he went from a student in the Tacoma school district to working in the disability rights field, and how self-advocacy helped him get to where he wanted to be.
